About Karen Reed

Karen has been working professionally in glass since 1981. Her work has been invited to show at The Bullseye Connections Gallery in Portland, OR, requested by the White House for Christmas decoration, accepted into shows curated by the past Director of Craft for the Smithsonian Museum and by the Artistic Director for the Pilchuck School of Glass. She is featured in the book, “Your Career in Craft” by Prof. Ellwyn Hayslip and Photographing Art, Craft and Collectible by Steve Meltzer. Her work has been highlighted in several issues of The Crafts Report Magazine, showcased in Glass Art Magazine, and featured in GLASScraftsmen Magazine. Her entire ‘Sunscape Series’ was shown on the CBS program “Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood”. Karen and her Earthstar Glass Studio were chosen to appear on WAFF-TV, a NBC affiliate, as a showcase for Warm Glass.

Karen is a contributing editor for GLASScraftsmen Magazine. She has written for the International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication, “Common Ground: GLASS”, the E-mag artglassinfo.com, Fired Arts & Crafts Magazine, and Stained Glass Quarterly. She is also an invited guest contributor on www.realglasspainting.com

Karen has studied with some of the finest glass professional in the U.S. including Traditional Glass Painting with Dick Millard and Vessel Painting with Cappy Thompson at the Pilchuck Glass School. She collaborates with ASID certified interior designers in creating custom designs for homes. She also designs for businesses, churches, commemorative pieces, and awards. Her unique pieces of glass art are displayed in select galleries in the US. Her diverse creative glass palette includes: pieced, painted, kiln carved, etched, fused, laminated, sandblasted, gilded, silk screened, cast, slumped and draped glass. These techniques can be freely combined to satisfy the design intent and create of unique works of art and beauty.

Karen enjoys teaching at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, The John C. Campbell Folk School, The Appalachian Center for Crafts, and locally at her studio, Earthstar Glass, and the studio of Ron Hogan Stained Glass Design Center. Karen was honored to receive an invitation to attend a week long teachers seminar at the Bullseye Glass Company in Portland, OR. She is also an alumnus of The Pilchuck Glass School.
